Why Dogs Bark?

Time to roll-up the sleeves and go for work!

This time again, Wikipedia didn’t let us down.  In their article “Bark (Utterance)” they quote Coppinger and Feinstein saying that dogs bark in long, rhythmic stanzas but adult wolf barks tend to be brief and isolated..

So, compared with wolves, dogs bark frequently and in many different situations. Furthermore, it is suggested that the reason for this lies in dog’s domestication process!!

It could mean that humans needed some help such as an early warning signs or so. The scientist go on to classified dog barking as:

  1. Warning Barks- These are rather “good barks” . This is based on the fact that dogs are very protective of their territory so they bark on first sign of any danger. This type of barking is often combined with growling and becomes louder especially as the the intruder approaches.
  2. Alarm Barks- This type of barking usually delivers message such as any type of noise (doorbell, car pulling in our front yard). In this case dog doesn’t feel threatened and wants only to inform us that something unusual has happened. Sometimes the barking might not stop until we take action.
  3. Separation Anxiety Barks.- Usually this type of barks are the hardest to cure. It happens when dog is experiencing separation anxiety during the time he is alone at home and feels anxious. We should seek our vet advise to avoid any underlining medical issues. Separation anxiety barks are very loud and in most cases can cause psychological distress to our neighbors we should put a lot effort to understand and cure this type of barking. Luckily there are few good options available.
  4. Attention Barks- As the name says our dog wants our attention and sometimes it is amazing to see how persistent they can be.
  5. Play Barks-Dog is very excited during play and he lets the world know about it.
  6. Bored Barking- If our dog does not have enough play sessions than he will get bored and most certainly will let us know about it.

So, now that we have seen why dogs bark and some of the dog barking types let’s see how to stop dogs from barking . Oh, almost forgot to mention one more reason why Fido barks. Still with me? Great!

Dog Owners Reinforced Dog Barking

Yup! We have taught our dog that it pays off to bark. Here is what I mean.

Let’s say you come home from the work and Fido is so happy and barks and makes big scene and at the beginning you do not pay too much attention to him but Fido keeps barking and eventually we give him a full attention.

We play with him, give him a toy or maybe even some yummy treats. So, no wonder Fido believes that barking is good. It just had earn him all those things he wanted. Next time all he needs to do is to keep barking and he will get what he wants.

And sadly, it is the truth.

Or…that’s what I thought before I found Alan’s review on Amazon:

It’s a miracle!!!,

October 13, 2005

I’ve had my dog for almost 3 years now and I will admit he’s not very social, especially to other dogs. I would always dread taking him for walks because he would just make SUCH a ruckus.

He would back and scream bloody murder if even the dog was on the other side of the street. Well imagine this 6 o’clock in the morning when the whole neighborhood is asleep. I’m sure you could imagine the embarrassment.

Well I got this collar last week and I swear it’s been a miracle. I’m kicking myself in the a## for not buying this collar earlier.

I am sure by now you got a plenty of advice how to stop dogs from barking. Some recommend spraying Fido with water every time he barks.

Others swear that two-finger smack works wonder. Lately we have also witnessed the rise of so-called dog barking collars.

Citronella Collar- A Miracle?

Alan is talking about Premier Gentle Spray Citronella Collar. In addition to this citronella collar there are a few more advanced citronella collars for dogs: Innotek Spray Commander and PetSafe Remote Spray Trainer

How Do Citronella Collars Work?

Citronella Collar is considered to be the safes, most humane and most effective of all dog bark collars. The reason for this raving is that this collar is using a spray of harmless spray of citronella each and every time dog barks.

This device is equipped with dog bark sensing unit which sets off spray dispensing unit immediately when it discovers dog barking.

Dog hears a hissing sound, dog feels a spray of citronella, dog smells citronella and finally dog sees the mist of citronella spray.

And many experts say that this might be one of the reason (it works on four out of our dog five senses) why this collar has been tested to be 88 % effective at stopping or reducing excessive dog barking.
