Eric Letendre, Professional Dog Trainer Explains How To Stop Dogs Barking Using Citronella Collar!

My favorite part is when Eric said:

The thing you have to understand about barking is when you want your dog to stop barking, you have to apply consequence.

Because what happens when most dog start barking…bark, bark, bark- the owner goes

“Quiet”

“Bark-”

“Quiet”

“Bark”

…and they just barking back  and forth at each other. So, you have to make sure that there is some sort of negative consequence that happens when dog starts barking

What is amazing about this short video is that Eric explains the most important thing about how to deal with the excessive barking without using any complicated language.

Here, of course, he refers to so-called Operant Conditioning and you can learn more about it  HERE

Why Is Citronella Collar So Effective?

As Erick mentioned, the old-fashioned way of yelling back at dogs doesn’t work. In order for dog to understand that barking isn’t acceptable  there has to be some sort of negative experience.

There are many ways to do this and one of very effective ways is to use to use the citronella collar. The advantage of using this collar is that the entire process if fully automated; from detecting dog barking to delivering the unpleasant consequence (in form of a spray of citronella)

Citronella Collar is very effective in controlling the excessive barking because:

  • It delivers unpleasant consequence every time Fido barks
  • This consequence takes place immediately when Fido barks
  • Fido doesn’t like the sound of citronella collar
  • Fido doesn’t like the smell of citronella
  • Fido doesn’t like to be sprayed by citronella spray

Why Is Consequence Important In Dogs Training?

Probably the simplest way to explain this is to point out that dog learns by building the association  between the behavior and the consequence.

There is a lot of evidence that suggest that the behaviors that earn the reward will be repeated more often while the behaviors that “earn” unpleasant consequence will decrease.
However, in order for the reward or the punishment to be any effective it has to happen immediately when the behavior takes place.

In addition to this, it is very important to stay consistent with the reward and/or the punishment or our dog would be confused and wouldn’t know any more what he is expected to do.
